Dr. MN, was an innovator and pioneer. He was a sharp shooter at both play and work. When everyone was practicing the established SICS & ECCE procedure for cataract, he was the first surgeon in Tamil Nadu to train himself in the advanced procedure of phacoemulsification.

Not just that, in 1994, he was the first in Tamil Nadu to conduct a workshop for learning phacoemulsification. It was the first of its kind back then and received enormous support and participation. Surgeons all over Tamilnadu, India and abroad flocked to watch his artistic surgeries, and till date, several senior ophthalmologists owe their surgical skill to this one man.

He was known for his ‘out of the box thinking’, as is evident from this lecture given at a national conference, where he obviously holds a biscuit in hand, using it to explain the textures of various cataracts!

Dr.Chalini Madhivanan

Vice-Chairman

Dr.Chalini was the Captain of the Ship, setting up protocols and processes to ensure quality eye care. All patients loved her, for her compassion and personal attention. She was a multitasker, and adept at juggling many roles., be it, cornea, refractive surgery or paediatric ophthalmology, seamlessly switching between her roles.

She was also a brilliant academician and clinician and to this day, we are astounded at the simple solutions she provides when we take our most complex cases to her.

Her special interest was in special children. She was the Founding member and President of Avvai kappagam for 12 years, a center run for children with special needs.

Every year, she conducted vision screening of all children with special needs in the area of North Chennai, and ensured no child went without glasses and appropriate treatment.

Till today, the legend continues, and vision screening for special children is an endearing project undertaken by the staff and doctors of M.N eye Hospital every year, under the leadership of paediatric ophthalmologist, Dr.Shruti Nihanth
